In Fall 2025, I joined Nexxa.AI's product team to help build and redesign platform features that enable engineers to automate their workflows. During my internship, I was tasked with creating new features, such as dark mode, engineering checkpoint expansions, and onboarding, among others, while redesigning existing features, including their AI chatbot. This case study showcases my redesign process to help this Nexxa feature become properly implemented in an engineer's workflow.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
CONTEXT
Nexxa.AI’s chat bot feature was developed to help engineers in industrialized industries with basic processing demands, inputing data, and automation tasks. However, a significant problem regarding user experience and it’s over lack of usefulness resulted in this feature not being used.
I was tasked to remodel and deliver Nexxa.AI’s new chat bot.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
CONTEXT
Nexxa.AI’s chat bot feature was developed to help engineers in industrialized industries with basic processing demands, inputing data, and automation tasks. However, a significant problem regarding user experience and it’s over lack of usefulness resulted in this feature not being used.
I was tasked to remodel and deliver Nexxa.AI’s new chat bot.
WHAT ARE THE ISSUES?
PAIN PointS
Before conducting research, I decided to take a deep dive into the original chat feature to address issues that were immediately noticeable from an unbiased perspective. Upon revision and discussing with my design lead, Hillary DeGuzman, the old chat feature lacked the basic necessities needed for a viable AI chat bot, resulting in an:
Absent Nav Bar: The user’s chats weren’t saved nor stored for later
Lack of Conversation Clarity: The bot’s responses lacked conversational clarity making it unattractive and jarring to use
No Work in Progress: Users are immediately given output information all at once without being shown the work in real time
No Shortcuts: Users couldn’t copy, paste, reply, share, etc.

Nav Bar: The user’s chats were saved and can be accessed later
Output Clarity: Providing users real time work and developing step-by-step guides for easier navigation
Editable Documents: Allowing users to make manual changes
Clear UI: While working, the chat bot’s would change their “work in progress” text and provide one-click interactions for fast paced iterations

Before designing, I listed down the required user needs as well as solutions regarding the user experience and user interface. Based on feedback and discussions, goals with the highest priority included:
Conversational Clarity (UX): Provide output messages that make the chat more engaging
Display Progress (UX/UI): The chat bot should display it's step-by-step process to the user prior to it starting the task
One-click interaction icons: Elements such as reply, copy, paste, etc. are needed to ensure the user doesn't have to repeat actions

THE SOLUTION
DESIGN PROCESS
Starting off with Low-Fidelity sketches and wire-framing helped to establish layout for text hierarchy, interaction/touch points and nav bar addition (indicated by the green circles, which was finalized to be placed on the right to avoid conflicting with the platform’s nav bar on the left).

FINAL DESIGN
The decision was made to skip mid-fidelity and move on to high-fidelity due to time constraints. Final design solutions included:
Nav Bar Addition: Chats are saved, can be added into projects for organization, and can allow users to create libraries for their projects
Better Text Layout, Hierarchy, and UI Structure: One-click interactions, text spacing and layout is more balanced with cleaner looking UI
Document Changes: Allowing users to edit produced documents directly in the chat feature before downloading, sharing, etc.
